La India Dormida stands for the sleeping Indian woman in Spanish. Indeed, it takes the form of an Indian woman whose profile can be seen across the town of El Valle. La India Dormida is one of El Valle’s most breathtaking sights, perhaps more so than others because of the rich history behind it. There are several variations in the local lore — some legends say la India fell in love with a local warrior, some say a conquistador, others say she was in love with both — but all stories end the same: la India, heartbroken, dies mourning the loss of her love in the mountains and now lies there forever to grieve. For $1.25, you can hike all the way to the summit of la India dormida; it affords an absolutely beautiful view of El Valle and the surrounding areas and can be easily done in a day.
